African Methodists

The African Methodist denomination was created in the 1780s by African American Methodists seeking religious teachings that did not discriminate based on race. As many churches at the time portrayed Black people as servants and slaves given to white men by God, this church was founded to give African American Christians a space to practice religion without being viewed as inherently lesser than any other member. This denomination shares many views with the Methodist faith, however it also focuses on social and political issues affecting the Black community .
