Established in the 1820s, Mormonism was founded by American Joseph Smith upon his reported discovery of golden plates that held God’s new rules for mankind. Transferring the script to the holy book, The Book of Mormon, Smith gained followers who also believed that shortly after the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, his soul appeared in the Americas before ascending to heaven. Facing persecution, Smith and his followers fled to Utah, however Smith’s leadership was passed on to his friend Brigham Young on the event of his death part way through the journey. The Church of Latter Day Saints was established, where followers believe that all mankind has the potential to ascend to a god-like position after death by practising and spreading their beliefs.
